Well, now you can, if you're using WSAS (think Axis2 for the Enterprise).
One of of our WSO2 developers recently made a contribution that allows you to call shell scripts (no Windows BAT support yet) as a web service call. Pretty neat, and quite useful. Now, my first thought was, i bet security guys will love this! There's no worries though, WSAS supports many ways of securing your exposed web service, so you can ensure only the users that should be calling it can.
