finally, competition, eh?

As i've written about before, competition is severely lacking in the Canadian mobile market. We have 3 big companies which dominate, and act as monopolists do when they have no competition - they gouge the public.

Well, finally, the foundation for that to begin to change took place today, when the government auctioned off new cell band spectrum, to the tune of $4.2 billion.

A recent study found that we are lagging behind most countries when it comes to the use and adoption of cell phones. Wonder why when rates here are 50% or higher compared to the US?

I hope this new spectrum and the new players who will enter the marketplace will push more innovation and competition from all the carriers. It's about damn time, it's only 2008 up here eh?
